Treadmill 10K time: what a good one is worth, and what the belt can take off it

By Bryan, founder of Treadwell ·

Your Saturday 10K was on the treadmill, and the display rolled past 6.22 at 49:52. Before you tell anyone, you type "good 10k treadmill time" into your phone.

Quick answer

There is no separate treadmill 10K standard. A 10K race result comes from a measured course, and yours came from a speed setting. At 50 minutes, each percent the belt runs off that setting is worth about half a minute. Compare your time with your own earlier time on this machine.

Your 10K time came off a belt you have not measured. It still tells you a lot, if you compare it with the right thing.

How long a 10K takes at each treadmill speed

My arithmetic for 6.2137 miles. Each time assumes the belt turns at the number on the display.

9.06:4041:25
9.56:1939:15

A 10K is a little over 6.21 miles, so a display that reads in hundredths of a mile must reach 6.22. A display in kilometers must reach 10.00. A 10 km/h setting is about 6.21 mph and covers a 10K in an hour. If your settings move in tenths of a mile per hour, 6.2 finishes at 60:08 and 6.3 is the first under the hour, at 59:11.

The distance you compare against was measured. Yours came from a setting.

A road result comes with a distance someone checked, and the virtual race guide explains how a road course gets its distance. Your treadmill 10K ended when the display hit 6.22 at a speed you pressed, and nothing on the machine lets you confirm that the belt carried you 6.2 miles.

Think of the pencil marks on a door frame where you measure your kid each birthday. They show how much she grew since last year, as long as it is the same frame and the same floor. They cannot tell you if she is tall enough for the ride at the fair, because the fair uses its own stick. Your treadmill 10K time is a door-frame mark.

Marks on one door frame compare well with each other. A treadmill 10K time works the same way.

Half a minute per percent

Researchers who put walkers and runners on four lab treadmills, one substantially worn, measured average belt speeds between 98 and 103 percent of each dialed-in target.

Take the sub-50 row. At 7.5 the 6.2137 miles take 49:43, which is 17 seconds under 50. If the belt ran 1 percent slow, the sub-50 you told people about was a 50:13 run. If it ran 2 percent slow, it was a 50:43 run.

What 49:43 at 7.5 was really worth

These numbers are made up for illustration. We did not measure this belt.

If the belt ranTrue 10K timeTrue pace per mile
1 percent slow50:138:05
2 percent slow50:438:10
2 percent fast48:447:51

If the belt ran 2 percent fast, the same clock was a 48:44 run, and the time you chase next is one your legs have already beaten.

Each percent is worth about 24 seconds on a 40 minute 10K, 30 at 50 minutes and 36 at 60. A belt inside that lab range moves a 50 minute 10K by about a minute and a half at most. So slide your time 90 seconds either way and see whether it crosses the edge of the 10K table you found. If it crosses 50 or 60 minutes, the belt may be deciding which side you land on.

What a treadmill 10K time is good for

Your fairest comparison is the same machine at the same setting, weeks apart, as long as the belt did the same thing both days. The next section shows how to check that. A different treadmill is a new door frame. The zone 2 guide shows why a setting from one treadmill does not travel to the next.

Save a round-number attempt for a belt whose speed you have checked, or for the road. If the belt is off, that is a question for your manual or a technician.

Before the next attempt, read the belt

Indoors your watch leans on its own motion sensor, and the watch treadmill guide shows why that misses a slow belt.

Run the belt empty at the setting you plan to hold. You point an iPhone Pro's camera and LiDAR at the turning belt, and Treadwell shows you the speed it measured. The same reading before the following attempt tells you whether you are still marking the same door frame.

Quick answers

What is a good 10K time on a treadmill? There is no separate treadmill 10K standard. A 10K race result comes from a measured course, and yours came from a speed setting. At 50 minutes, each percent the belt runs off that setting is worth about half a minute. Compare your time with your own earlier time on this machine.

How long does it take to run 10K on a treadmill? Divide 6.21 miles by your speed in mph and multiply by 60 to get minutes, or read it off the table above. At 10 km/h, which is about 6.21 mph, a 10K takes exactly 60 minutes, as long as the belt turns at the speed you set.

Is a treadmill 10K faster than a road 10K? Not reliably. A 2019 review of 34 studies found that time trials came out poorer on a treadmill on average. In that review, heart rate and effort on the belt ran higher at quick steady paces and lower at easy ones. The 1 percent incline habit was tested from roughly 5:22 to 9:11 per mile, which are the paces of a 10K run in about 33 to 57 minutes. The belt's own error can also move your time either way. The guide to whether treadmill running is easier goes further.

Can you train for a 10K on a treadmill? Yes. Two things help beyond the plan itself. If you run at a 1 percent incline, know that it was only tested at the paces in the answer above. Check the belt at your 10K setting too, because nothing on the display confirms that the speed you pressed is the speed the belt runs. The guide to taking treadmill fitness to the road covers race day.
